چکیده

Crossmodal semantic priming is often considered to be a valid technique for measuring the activation of multiple word candidates, particularly if used with auditory prime words cut off before their offset. In previous studies, the technique has been used to show that the activation of multiple candidates is modulated by preceding context. However, the technique has also failed to yield consistent priming in other studies. A near-replication was carried out of one important predecessor experiment which has yielded priming effects indicating multiple activation. Results did not show consistent priming effects in this experiment. Monte Carlo simulations of the predecessor experiment strongly suggest that its positive results are artefacts of inter-listener variations in that particular experimental design. Hence, effects found with the crossmodal semantic partial priming technique may be less robust, and less reliable, than assumed so far. key words: spoken-word processing, crossmodal priming, experimental design, multiple activation, Monte Carlo simulation Robustness of crossmodal semantic priming —3— On measuring multiple activation using the crossmodal semantic priming technique

On measuring multiple lexical activation using the cross-modal semantic priming technique

Cross-modal semantic priming with partial auditory primes seems a good technique to assess spoken-word recognition, because it allows tracking the activation of multiple word candidates. However, previous research using this technique has found inconsistent results. First, a priming experiment is reported that addresses this technique’s validity. Results show that semantic priming is not observ...

Semantic Priming Effect on Relative Clause Attachment Ambiguity Resolution in L2

This study examined whether processing ambiguous sentences containing relative clauses (RCs) following a complex determiner phrase (DP) by Persian-speaking learners of L2 English with different proficiency and working memory capacities (WMCs) is affected by semantic priming. The semantic relationship studied was one between the subject/verb of the main clause and one of the DPs in the complex D...

اختلال در شبکه معنایی بیماران اسکیزوفرنیک: آماده‌سازی معنایی با ارائه همزمان دو آماده‌ساز

Abstract Objectives: The present study was designed to investigate the automatic activation of seman-tic priming in schizophrenic patients. Method: 36 schizophrenic patients and 36 normal sub-jects participated in two experiments. In experiment one, the effect of semantic relation on iden- tification of degraded targets was examined between a series of single prime words and single target words...

Semantic-based crossmodal processing during visual suppression

To reveal the mechanisms underpinning the influence of auditory input on visual awareness, we examine, (1) whether purely semantic-based multisensory integration facilitates the access to visual awareness for familiar visual events, and (2) whether crossmodal semantic priming is the mechanism responsible for the semantic auditory influence on visual awareness. Using continuous flash suppression...

Enhanced EEG gamma-band activity reflects multisensory semantic matching in visual-to-auditory object priming

An important step in perceptual processing is the integration of information from different sensory modalities into a coherent percept. It has been suggested that such crossmodal binding might be achieved by transient synchronization of neurons from different modalities in the gamma-frequency range (>30 Hz). Here we employed a crossmodal priming paradigm, modulating the semantic congruency betw...
